Some Info on the Sea Otter

The sea otter is classified as one of the world’s endangered mammals. As can be implied from its name it is a sea creature. It is unusual in that it does not have blubber which would keep them insulated. It has dark brown fur which is the finest and densest fur known of any animal.

It’s thick fur, is its main insulation and consists of two types. The outer layer consists of longer, waterproof hairs, and serves to keep the shorter under layer dry. The outer layer requires constant grooming.

You may also find it interesting that an adult sea otter has approximately 640,000 hairs per square inch.

The sea otter's fur has natural oils which repel water and trap tiny air bubbles. This provides a layer of warm air between the otter's skin and the environment. They spend up to 48% of daylight time grooming their fur.

Sea otters can walk on land, although they spend most of their time in the sea.

They spend a long time floating on their backs in the water, and they can do most things in the sea, including eating and sleeping. They can close off their nostrils and ears to keep out the sea water.

Their hind feet are webbed, to help with swimming, and their front paws can be used for gripping.

Sea otters, unlike many mammals use tools. This means they use rocks to open shells as well as to pry its prey loose for eating. They have even used strands of seaweed to keep themselves anchored while they sleep.

They are very agile, playful and graceful in the sea, although they are clumsier on land.

Unfortunately the sea otter was hunted for its fur so much that an international ban on hunting them was signed in 1911. This was to prevent the sea otter from becoming extinct. The sea otter is usually to be found in the pacific ocean around Canada, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Alaska and California.
