Some Info on the Crowned Guenon
The crowned guenon is a fairly small arboreal monkey, with yellow fur on its face, belly and the inside of its legs, and yellow pointed ears. It has a wide black band from its ear narrowing to its eye on both sides, and a striped crest in the centre of its head. The tail, which is long is dark at the end. The fur on its back is brown to speckled grey.
Crowned guenons live in groups of about eight or more, with one dominant male. They are very agile and can make fairly large leaps between trees, which is useful as they tend to live rather high up in the canopy of the forest. Only the dominant males can form a group, which usually consists of one single dominant male and several females, with their dependent young. Other males have to either live a solitary life or join in with groups of species that are related. These males appear to form strong associations with the species they join. This leads to there being large groups of mixed species.
Their diet is mostly fruit, but they also eat insects, leaves and nuts. In some places, crowned guenons may migrate rather a long distance in order to find food supplies that are seasonally abundant.
The crowned guenon can be found in the forests of Central Africa, from the south-east of Nigeria to as far south as northern Angola and eastward as far as Rwanda and Uganda. It is also found on the island of Bioko to the west, where it could be the only species of monkey to actually be expanding its range.
